Joist hanger nails are special nails rated for use with joist hangers and similar brackets. Sometimes called "Teco nails" (for example 1-1/2 x .148 shank nails used in metal connectors such as hurricane ties)
Three shank diameters are available: 10-Gauge (.131"), 9-Gauge (.148"), 8-Gauge (.162") Two types of shanks are available, Smooth shank (a.k.a. plain) and Ring shank (a.k.a. annular thread) Smooth shank is what you expect from a standard nail providing decent holding power. Ring shank nails, on the other hand, dramatically increase holding power. Ring shank has threaded rings that are cut into the shank of the nail helping it grip the wood fibers as it's being driven. Ring shank is much less likely to back-out over time.
Our Metal Connector Joist Hanger Nails are available in two grades of corrosion resistance including Hot Dipped Galvanized and 316 Grade Stainless Steel:
ASTM A153-D Hot Dip Galvanized meets and/or exceeds the United States standard for Hot Dip Zinc Mass Coating of ASTM A153 class D Fasteners. HDG grade nails are first cut to length and heads formed from a large spool of brite steel wire rod. Then nails are Hot Dipped into Molten Zinc until a thick uniform coating is achieved across the entire surface of the nail. Next, the nails are either packaged in bulk or collated together into strips or coils. Our HDG Nails meet and or exceed the ASTM A153 Class D Fastener specification. Meets the minimum requirement for ACQ Treated Lumber but is Not Recommended. For ACQ Treated lumber we recommend Stainless Steel.
316 Grade Stainless Steel is best suited for tropical, seaside, salt water contact applications, or any project near large bodies of water. Recommended for all outdoor applications with ACQ-treated lumber, redwood, cedar, and acidic or oil-based exotic woods where Marine Grade fasteners are needed to avoid unsightly stains, streaks, corrosion and discoloration.
