What are the benefits of using Plastic Insert Collation instead of Wire Collation? Plastic insert collation is the best choice when face nailing your material (face nailing is when the end result is an exposed nail head) Why? Because with wire collated coil nails the wire weld actually breaks off when struck by your coil nailers driver blade and is driven down into your material with the nail. The result here could be a little wire burr sticking out from under the nail head. This could be a nuisance, forcing someone to go back and snip off little wires. Opting for Plastic Insert collation, on the other hand, results in a cleaner surface. This is because the Plastic Insert Collation actually releases its hold on the nail when your nailers driver blade makes contact. The plastic is then is ejected out through a slot in the front of your coil nailer instead of being driven down with the nail. The ejected plastic strip grows longer as you continue nailing. Just tear it off when it gets too annoying. The finished result is a cleaner surface with no foreign debris sticking out from underneath the nail head. The PCN series of 15 degree plastic insert coil nails are available in three different grades of corrosion resistance including ASTM A153-D Hot Dip Galvanized, 304 Grade Stainless Steel, and 316 Grade Stainless Steel:
ASTM A153-D Hot Dip Galvanized meets and/or exceeds the United States standard for Hot Dip Zinc Mass Coating of ASTM A153 class D Fasteners. HDGW grade nails are cut to length and heads formed from a large spool of Hot Dipped wire rod. Our HDGW nails will meet and/or exceed the ASTM A153 Class D Fastener specification. Meets the minimum requirement for ACQ Treated Lumber but is Not Recommended. For ACQ Treated lumber we recommend Stainless Steel.
304 Grade Stainless Steel is best suited for typical outdoor applications to avoid nail corrosion and discoloration. ACQ-treated lumber, redwood, cedar, and acidic or oil-based exotic woods.
316 Grade Stainless Steel is best suited for tropical, seaside, salt water contact applications, or any project near large bodies of water. Recommended for all outdoor applications with ACQ-treated lumber, redwood, cedar, and acidic or oil-based exotic woods where Marine Grade fasteners are needed to avoid unsightly stains, streaks, corrosion and discoloration.
